  1. Many children face serious stress in their family environment. See pages 534-540 in your course text. Describe three signs that demonstrate a young child might be experiencing mental/emotional stress due to factors outside his/her early childhood setting and consequently might need special attention. What might early childhood professionals do in cases such as this to help alleviate a child’s stress?
  2. As you have been learning, early childhood educators have a responsibility to help provide mentally/emotionally healthy environments for children, themselves, and their colleagues. Drawing on Section 15.4 in your course text, define what you consider to be a mentally healthy early childhood environment. What specific stressors might you expect to find in an early childhood setting? How might you alleviate these stressors?
  3. Refer to Section 10.4, “Recording Health Status of Children” (pp. 374-378), in your course text. Summarize the pros and cons of three different health status recording methods described in your readings. What challenges might early childhood professionals face in recording health observations in their settings? What solutions can you suggest for overcoming these challenges?

Read the following case scenario and express your ideas concerning campus security. Justify your response by referencing the readings and citing specific arguments found in them.

Case Scenario

Your Chief of Campus Security calls you to tell you that he has received a call from a female student who has been threatened by her husband. The student is in the nursing program and has been pressured by her husband to drop out and stay home to take care of him and the children. He has abused her in the past and has thrown out her books and homework assignments. Because of the physical abuse, she and her children separated from the husband and moved into subsidized housing. However, he has continued to try to get her to move home.

Last evening, he called to tell her that, if she went to class today, he would come on campus and shoot her dead. The student is afraid he will follow through with his threat. Campus Security is concerned for the safety of this student and others who might get in the way of a gun‐wielding husband.

What issues does the scenario create? What leadership competencies are involved? Who should be involved in addressing the situation? What actions would you take? Are there lessons to be learned? (Boggs, & McPhail, 2016, p. 177).

Section 4: Healthy Food and Nutrition

Based on current trends and realities, it is clear that adults committed to children’s healthy growth and development must advocate for high-quality nutrition, which begins with a strong foundational knowledge of children’s nutritional needs, developmental stages, and dietary guidelines.

For your course project this week, you will create a fourth section that provides important information on nutrition and age-appropriate foods for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers and that will serve as an educational tool for adults who work with young children and their family members.

Use the following guidelines:
