CLASSROOM CHALLENGE 2 – BULLYING IN THE CLASSROOM INSTRUCTIONS

Bullying is becoming more and more commonplace in the classroom, even in schools once deemed “safe.” Teaching students how to share space with others at school can positively impact behavior both in and outside the classroom.

In this module/week’s classroom challenge you will read about some ways bullying might look at your school one day. The provided scenario presents several types of bullying, and you must identify three of these types. Read and study the scenario provided as you consider ways to keep bullying out of your classroom. The 3 types of bullying you discuss must come from the scenario.

Specificity is important with this assignment; as you write your paper, you must continually ask yourself “why” and “how.” In your paper you must discuss 3 types of bullying found in the provided scenario and ways that you can keep bullying out of your classroom. To earn full credit, your paper must employ specific and quality discourse.

The Biblical integration for the second classroom challenge is to demonstrate the Fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22, 23 in your solutions: love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

The grading rubric for this assignment is provided in the Course Content folder and should be considered the best source regarding what is required to successfully complete this assignment.

Include the following discussion points in your paper for each of the 3 types of bullying you identify and discuss:

A. From the scenario provided find and identify the first type of bullying you see exemplified and consider what is taking place that causes you to recognize it as bullying.

1. Use examples from the scenario provided to show how this type of bullying is revealing itself in your classroom.

2. Use peer-reviewed research articles to explain why you identified this behavior as bullying. Cite this research in your discussion and include it in a reference list of your sources at the end of your paper.

3. What solutions can you apply in your classroom to demonstrate how you will prevent this type of bullying in the future?

4. Include discussion of how you will know that your solutions are effective. What changes will you see in your classroom?

B. From the scenario provided find and identify the second type of bullying you see exemplified and consider what is taking place that causes you to recognize it as bullying.

Repeat discussion points 1 through 4 as laid out above in section A.

C. From the scenario provided find and identify the third type of bullying you see exemplified and consider what is taking place that causes you to recognize it as bullying.

Repeat discussion points 1 through 4 as laid out above in section A.

D. Biblical Integration – Fruit of the Spirit

The following are requirements for your paper:

A. Your paper must meet a minimum of 1,200 words (not including the title page, abstract page, and reference page) and be formatted in current APA style.

Moral development and bullying due in 48 hours

 DUE IN 48 HOURS

Moral Development and Bullying

Chapter 11 of the course textbook examines cultural aspects of moral development, Kohlberg’s moral reasoning theory, and Gilligan’s alternative approach to Kohlberg.

Reflect on what you have read about the related issues of bullying in schools and teen suicide and consider these materials in light of your experience with bullying, both as a child and, if applicable, as a parent or adult observing this activity among school-age children.

Then locate and review one anti-bullying program with an Internet presence.

For this assignment, address the following items, being mindful of your emotional and intellectual responses to bullying and the exercise of asymmetrical power among school-age children:

  • Summarize your thoughts and feelings about bullying and teen suicide as pathologies of moral development in middle childhood.
  • Describe how Kohlberg’s model can be applied to bullying programs in schools.
  • Then explain Gilligan’s critique of, and alternative to, Kohlberg’s approach, evaluating tensions between the two approaches and what each approach brings to an analysis of bullying.
  • Compare and contrast the two approaches with respect to bullying behavior and specifically to bullying behavior among girls versus boys. Do you believe different theoretical tools are necessary to analyze female versus male cases? Why or why not?
  • Finally, evaluate how successfully the program you found on the Internet addresses and accounts for and applies knowledge about moral development as theorized by Kohlberg, Gilligan, and others. How do theories of moral development inform action to prevent and treat the consequences of bullying?

Your paper should be 1200-1600 words in length. Support your analysis and evaluation with references to the textbook readings as well as to no fewer than two peer-reviewed, scholarly sources that focus on the two theorists in question.
