Line managers and supervisors have a responsibility to provide meaningful work and empower employees to get it done without being micromanaged.This leads to the Unit Assignment paper topic to build a “Succession Plan” program that will address your approach to how to effectively spot talent among your own people who have been loyal and demonstrated the skills and potential to become good leaders to excel in a leadership role.   

The previous two units laid the foundation to lead into this one. Unit One introduced you to writing a quality mission, vision, and guiding principles statement to set the tone for you organization. Unit Two picked up as a preview to this unit by opening the discussion to the hazards and costs involved with unfair labor practices and discrimination in the workplace that are key duties of leaders to maintain a vigil and act whenever it surfaces. This unit picks up to help build a plan to fill top leadership spots.   

You want to begin your paper with an introduction.  The “introduction” opens the paper to introduce the topic and main points to be addressed  in the paper such as a background on the company and specific position. 

Then create the “body”.  To eliminate confusion and ensure you cover everything asked for in the assignment, I suggest you use the following three headers to break up the body of your paper.

  • Critical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):  This section will include KSAs and whether you will select, train, or both for KSAs.
  • Retaining Successor:  This section will address how you insure your selected successor does not leave the firm.
  • Succession Planning Process:  This section will identify the succession planning process you will use.

 Then create a  “conclusion” to wrap up your paper.  The conclusion summarizes the main points and any final comments or thoughts.

  2. Will you select, train, or both for these KSAs?
